Q: Dear Chuck, Is it normal for my child to change pronouns regularly? How can I support them with this?

A:

Dear Anonymous,

Yes, it is perfectly appropriate for your child to explore various pronouns as a part of their gender exploration journey. As a caring adult, it’s important for you to follow your child’s lead and be intentional about the questions you ask your child. There are multiple pronouns people may use. The most commonly used pronouns are She/Her/Hers, He/Him/His, and They/Them/Theirs. There are also many other gender-neutral pronouns. As humans, we all make mistakes. If you find that you used the wrong pronoun for your child, correct yourself, apologize once (but no more), and commit to consistently using your child’s pronouns.

Sincerely,

Chuck
