Amanda Wogaman, the Civil Rights Team advisor for Harpswell Coastal Academy, recently ran an LGBTQ+ History class. She shared her journey with the students through LGBTQ+ history in a recent letter to OUT Maine. Thank you Amanda!

Harpswell Students

“Pictured are a few of my brave students who joined me in our first LGBTQ+ History class at HCA holding some examples of the work we did together. Full disclosure- I’m not an LGBTQ+ scholar and barely even pass as a social studies teacher but we did it, together.”

Harpswell Collage

“Through a combination of GLSEN, OUT MAINE and some other great resources, we did a trimester-long dive into the trail- blazing, barrier-breaking stories of LGBTQ+- identified people in the history of the United States.”

Harpswell Students 2

“When I asked students to sum up how they felt about what we’d discovered together as a class with one word, here’s some of what I got: happy, frustrated, angry, seen, proud. Thanks for providing resources and creating the proverbial space for this kind of work to happen in our state.”
