OUT Maine’s interactive trainings are inclusivity-focus and trauma-informed. We train anyone who impacts the lives of queer and trans youth and works within the space of social and emotional learning (SEL). We are particularly expert at working with clinicians and social workers (LCSW); counselors, teachers and others in schools and other educational settings; summer camps; etc. OUT Maine’s professional trainings can be taken for continuing education (CEU) credits, and printable certificates of completion are available after each module.

This short training provides an introduction to OUT Maine services, a brief overview of terminology, as well as the support strategies that are easy to implement in any professional setting. This training does not offer time for discussion, questions, or program-specific supports.

Supporting LGBTQ+ Youth in Youth-Based Programs

This training is designed for organizations who provide direct youth programming. It will provide a foundational understanding for those who are new to working with LGBTQ+ youth, as well as updated and in-depth information for those who are looking for a refresher. During this training participants will review: terminology and pronoun usage; risk and protective factors, supporting transgender and gender expansive youth, student rights, intervening on harmful behavior, creating inclusive forms, and navigating facility needs. This training is based on our published Best Practices for LGBTQ+ Inclusive Programming.

This training is designed for community programs that interact with LGBTQ+ youth, but do not provide youth-specific programming. This training provides an overview of LGBTQ+ terminology, risk and protective factors, pronoun usage, inclusive forms, and building welcoming and inclusive environments for LGBTQ+ youth.

Building Welcoming and Inclusive Faith Communities

This training provides faith communities with an overview of LGBTQ+ terminology, risk and protective factors, myths and misconceptions, and tips to create a welcoming and inclusive faith community for LGBTQ+ youth. This training offers ample time for questions and discussion.

Building Welcoming and Inclusive Libraries

This training is designed for library staff who are looking for specific ways to create and maintain a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth at their library. This training covers terminology, risk and protective factors, pronouns and language, book recommendations, managing LGBTQ+ inclusive collections, library-specific programming, and addressing push-back.

Building Welcoming and Inclusive Summer Camps

This training is designed for youth summer camps – both overnight and day programs. It will provide a foundational understanding for those who are new to working with LGBTQ+ youth, as well as updated and in-depth information for those who are looking for a refresher. During this training participants will review: terminology and pronoun usage; risk and protective factors, supporting transgender and gender expansive youth, and interpreting rights and laws. This training will then dive into camp-specific information such as how to create inclusive and safe housing options, navigating privacy and confidentiality needs, and explore how to make common summer camp activities such as ropes courses, swim tests, and dances accessible and safe for LGBTQ+ participants.

Next Steps for Small Groups

This training is designed for small groups of either professionals or community members who have already taken a foundational-level training on supporting LGBTQ+ youth. This training will be more personal and will focus on turning theory and intentions into action. Are you already an ally, but want more support determining action steps you and your organization can take to best support the LGBTQ+ youth you are working with? The trainer will facilitate supportive self-reflection, small group discussions, and offer practices to turn best intentions into praxis.

Making Maine's Health and Mental Health Services Accessible, Equitable, and Inclusive for LGBTQ+ Youth

For Practice Managers

This introductory training session is for all professionals who are managing healthcare and mental health practices in Maine. This training will cover the barriers of care for transgender youth attempting to access mental or mental health services in Maine, and list the best practices to overcome these barriers. The training will provide participants with an understanding of the importance of bringing the professional development and resources developed by OUT Maine to healthcare and mental health practices across Maine. Participants will be introduced to an overview of the professional training content for clinical and non-clinical staff and the Practice kit resources available.

Best Practices for Working with LGBTQ+ Youth and Families

For Mental Health Providers and Other Direct Support Professionals

This day-long training is for mental health providers, case managers, residential workers, school nurses, social workers, and any professional providing direct support for youth. This training is broken into four sections – an introduction of terminology, risk, protective factors, laws, and rights, and an overview of best practices, followed by extensive sections focusing on the provider, direct support of youth, and navigating family systems. This training is trauma-informed, strength-based, and offers CEUs. This training will be co-facilitated by Maura Oaks, who is an LCPC and OUT Maine’s Mental Health Coordinator, and August Sender, who is OUT Maine’s Training Coordinator and who has direct experience navigating the mental health services in Maine as a non-binary transgender individual.

This training is designed for coaches, athletic trainers, or any other staff working with student-athletes. It covers current laws and best practices, and explores the specific needs of LGBTQ+ athletes.

This training is designed for those ready to go beyond the basics. Participants engage in deep discussions covering inclusive classroom climates, subject-specific lesson ideas, conversation starters for students, and student rights. Participants build the skills to provide direct support to LGBTQ+ youth while navigating challenging situations.

202: Supporting and Affirming Trans, Non-Binary and Gender-Expansive Youth (all grades)

This training is designed to provide participants with a deeper understanding of how to support and advocate for the unique needs of transgender, non-binary, and gender expansive students through scenarios, discussion, and content that reflects current best practices.

203: Developing and Implementing LGBTQ+ Inclusive Policy (all grades)

This training is designed for school administration staff looking for up-to-date information on developing and implementing policy that supports and protects LGBTQ+ students.

204: Creating Inclusive Classrooms, Curriculum and Conversations

This training is designed for classroom teachers who want to learn about and share ideas on creating welcoming and inclusive classrooms; in-person and remote learning are both covered. Participants will receive curriculum suggestions and tips to navigate potentially challenging conversations about gender and sexuality with youth.

205: Supporting and Advocating for LGBTQ+ Youth (for school counselors, social workers and nurses, all grades)

This training is designed for K-12 school counselors, social workers, school nurses, risk prevention specialists, and other direct support staff who want to learn best practices for supporting and advocating for LGBTQ+ students. This training acknowledges the complex roles that school counselors and social workers have within a school district and will offer a facilitated conversation about how to best directly support LGBTQ+ students, as well as advocating for their unique needs within the school systems. Time is included for sharing ideas with peers.

This training is for school boards who are looking for short, evidence-based, Maine-focused training on creating safe and welcoming school environments for LGBTQ+ youth. This training will cover statistics, risk and protective factors, the rights and the law, best practices, and the importance of strong protective policies for supporting the educational success of Maine’s LGBTQ+ youth.

Developing and Implementing Inclusive Practices and Database Systems

This training is for school administration staff who are looking for up-to-date information on how to develop practices and implement policies to best support and protect LGBTQ+ students.

This training is designed for anyone providing mental health support services to LGBTQ+ youth, including school counselors, residential program staff, social workers, and therapists. Participants will discuss direct support, working with families, working in school systems, and exploring the provider’s needs through a trauma-informed lens.
