OUT! As I Want to Be is an organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered, and queer young people, ages 14-22, and their friends, from midcoast Maine and its offshore islands. It seeks to provide:

Affirmation of young people in their quest for identity.
Support for young people who may feel isolated and alienated as they struggle to understand and accept their sexuality. Our main purpose is to assure them that they are not alone in their struggle. Support has a range of forms, from a safe space at regular OUT! As I Want to Be meetings, where young people can be themselves and talk about the issues confronting them in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding, to help and guidance when young people's emerging sexual identities bring them into conflict with their parents, schools, or communities.
Advocacy on behalf of youth who face discrimination or harassment in their schools or communities because of their sexual orientation, who face proceedings in the judicial system, or who need social or medical services from public agencies.
Education geared to the needs of queer youth in such areas as health, civil rights, political issues and action, and queer history and culture.
Outreach to young people and adults in the communities if our region, to make Outright's services known to those who need them; to convey information and understanding of GLBT life to the communities in which we all live; and to create and sustain connections with other GLBT groups and institutions in Maine and in the nation.

OUT! As I Want to Be is a network of young people and adults who have agreed to share the responsibility of providing these services to those in our region that need them, according to our individual skills, resources, and positions in our communities. Many, but not all, members of this network are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered.

OUT! As I Want to Be is incorporated not for profit in the State of Maine and has acquired 501(c)3 status under the Federal Tax Code.

Adult Advisors are men and women age 24 and over, of proven responsibility, integrity, and commitment to meeting the needs of GLBTQ youth. They serve as guides, teachers, resource persons, sympathetic listeners, supporters, and advocates for young people who turn to OUT! As I Want to Be. They take responsibility for the safety and security of OUT! As I Want to Be activities and their participants. In cooperation with OUT! As I Want to Be members, they develop and guide educational, social, and recreational programs.

Adult Advisors do not make basic decisions about OUT! As I Want to Be's direction or activities, but work with young people to make the best decisions for the group. Adult Advisors are expected to behave toward young people at all times as responsible professionals and/or surrogate parents. The needs of the young people who are OUT! As I Want to Be members are always the Advisors first consideration.
